ImPACTS ED Project

Improving Pediatric Care Through Simulation (ImPACTS) is a team of Pediatric Emergency Specialists who have conducted pediatric improvement programs in EDs for > 10 years.

ImPACTS aims to ensure

  • All emergency providers are prepared to provide timely, safe and effective care to children.

  • All EDs have the equipment/resources to provide timely, safe and effective care to children.

  • All regional tertiary care pediatric centers are collaborating with their community partners.

Top five reasons why my ED should participate in ImPACTS?

  1. Caring critically ill children in the ED is one of the most stressful moments in healthcare.

  2. Many EDs are not be optimized to care for critically ill children.

  3. In contrast to adults, there are few opportunities to practice caring for critically ill children.

  4. Many EDs have limited access to pediatric training and improvement resources.

  5. Participation in ImPACTS is associated with improved pediatric readiness and outcomes!

How can my ED participate in ImPACTS?

  1. Designate a Pediatric Emergency Car Coordinator (PECC) to recruit staff, coordinate with your ED leadership and partner with a designated ImPACTS Pediatric Emergency Specialist!

  2. PECC recruits 1-2 physicians/PA/APRNs + 2-5 nurses to participate in a 12-week program.

WEEK 1: Simulation-based training #1 (90 minutes)

  • One interprofessional team (1-2 doctor, 2-3 RNs, tech) will care for a series of THREE pediatric patients.

  • ImPACTS pediatric emergency medicine specialists will co-facilitate the simulations and debriefing & bring simulation equipment to your ED!

  • Virtual/blended simulation options are available in case of COVID restrictions.

WEEKS 2-11: online pediatric education/resources (20-minutes/week x 8)

  • ImPACTS created podcasts, choose your own adventures, live-action videos, webinars and cognitive aids.

WEEK 12:  Simulation-based training #2 (90 minutes)

  • The same interprofessional team (1-2 doctors, 2-3 RNs, tech) will care for a series of THREE additional pediatric patients.

  • ImPACTS pediatric emergency medicine specialists will co-facilitate the simulations and debriefing & bring sim equipment to your ED!
